Sustain (A) Population

Population and consumption determine the level of stress we place on the environment. Although we have not taken great strides in reducing consumption, we can and do discuss our levels of consumption. Population size and growth rate, on the other hand, are rarely discussed even though they ultimately have an even greater impact on the environment than per capita consumption levels.

An understating of exponential growth is critical. Population levels can seem to increase at very small annual levels but over time, these seemingly minor growth rates become human tsunamis. They are particularly environmentally devastating when combined with increasing consumption levels.

Sustain (A) Economy

Currently “the economy” is viewed as a deity which bestows the benefits of prosperity upon all of us. The larger “the economy” is, the better off we all will be. In fact, the economy we worship and measure with the GDP metric is really only the commercial economy – the size of the market for goods and services bought with dollars.

“The economy” as we measure it now does not represent the size or the structure of the real wealth creation process. It does not represent the well-being of individuals nor the health of the nation, its environment or its finances. It represents cash flow and nothing more. Cash flow is not a full accounting system and is fatally misleading as dominant indicator.

Rare Earths Supply

While not a current producer of REEs, Canada has some of the most advanced exploration projects in the world. Canada hosts 20 of the 63 advanced REEs projects tracked by Technology Metals Research, a company focused on markets and analysis of critical and strategic materials such as REEs.

REEs are categorized as being either “light” or “heavy”:

  • Light REEs (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium and scandium) are produced in global abundance and are in surplus supply
  • Heavy REEs (terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium and yttrium) are produced mainly in China and are in limited supply. Global efforts to bring new resources to the marketplace continue.

Many of Canada’s most advanced REEs exploration projects contain high concentrations of the globally valued heavy REEs used in high-technology and clean-energy applications.
